Lubbock Symphony Orchestra

This weekend, Sept. 21 and 22, the Lubbock Symphony Orchestra will be presenting our first concert of the 2007-2008 season. Music director Tomasz Golka will lead the orchestra (and his brother, pianist Adam Golka) in a program of Slavic music:

  • Karlowicz, Lithuanian rhapsody
  • Rachmaninoff, piano concerto no. 2
  • Mussorgsky (orch. Ravel), Pictures at an Exhibition

Concerts are at 8:00pm at the Lubbock Memorial Civic Center.

Mussorgsky's Pictures was the first classical recording I ever owned. To some extent, it's responsible for getting me into this profession. Despite its longstanding place in my repertoire, it still sounds new and interesting to me. I've performed not only the Ravel orchestration, but also the Rimsky-Korsakoff version. I have a splendid recording at home of Lawrence Leonard's piano concerto version, some movements of which I prefer to the Ravel.

An interesting take on rhythm
