Here's an interesting story from the LA Times about Kelly Clarkson's new album. Kelly has been butting heads with Clive Davis, "the man" at BMG, because she wants more creative control and he basically wants money. The article offers an intelligent look at both sides.

Her new album, My December hits stores today and I'm sure it will make money (if her 366,000 MySpace friends and the reviewers at Amazon.com are any indication.

So will people buy it because it's Kelly Clarkson, because it's Clarkson performing Clarkson, or because they want to stick it to the man? She can definitely sing--I've been tempted to buy her other albums for that reason. Am I particularly interested in what she has to say as a songwriter? Not so much, although the songs are not terrible and they're certainly different from her previous fare (I'm listening to "Sober" now and I've heard her perform "Never again" on Letterman's show). Will a lot of people buy this album because they can help her stick it to the man? I wouldn't be surprised if there are a few who ordinarily wouldn't buy something so pop might take this opportunity to support the underdog...
