I thought I start the new year with some updates on previous postings.
First, over the holiday break I had the opportunity to finish Blink. Sure enough, there's a chapter on rapid cognition and expertise in music (a musician by the name of Kenna). Evidently all of the people in the business were blown away by this guy; market research (average Joes) said he'd never sell.
The book closes with a chapter on auditions and gender, and on being able to tell the difference between a woman playing and a man playing. Screened auditions have resulted in more women getting jobs in what used to be good ol' boys clubs. Incidentally, this is still a hot topic (gender and orchestras) more so in Europe, I think, than over here. Here's another article that discusses the subject.
